Blue Angels

PANEL FROM THE COMIC BOOK Les Anges bleus (Volume 36)
FIRST PUBLICATION 1970
AIRCRAFT Grumman F-11 Tiger

Buck Danny has been promoted to colonel and is tasked with coordinating the Blue Angels aerobatic team at the Naval Air Station in Pensacola, Florida. This aerobatic team was a real-life unit: following World War II, seeking to win over public opinion, the US Navy established the Blue Angels in 1946 to demonstrate to the public how the military had won the war, particularly in the Pacific.

This is the first album in the series where Hubinon abandons the classic four-tier grid layout in favor of three strips per page. “I have much more work to do with three strips than with four,” Hubinon explains. “There is no room for filler close-ups anymore! This new format demands greater precision. Since each panel takes up more space on the page, the sense of spectacle can unfold without constraints.”
